Benediction on the Santa Cruz Islands Courage On Smith

Aboard the destroyer Smith in the South Pacific on November 1 a Japanese torpedo plane crashed on the forecastle during the Santa Cruz action. Flames swept the deck as the torpedo exploded, damaging the No 1 engine room and ammo rooms. The Smith stood firm, aiding the carrier and shooting down planes for two more hours. Lieutenant Commander Hunter Wood Jr. led as the ship fought the blaze and rescued a new crewman, Ensign Neal Anderson Scott, who joined October 10.
