North Carolina Prison Struggles With Overcrowding and Hard Times
North Carolina’s state prison faces its gravest problem as overpopulation climbs beyond capacity. Superintendent George Ross Pou says 1,351 inmates occupy permanent quarters designed for 900, with about 1,000 more in temporary camps, and 200 idle inmates. He notes plummeting crop incomes reflect wider economic stress, while the system is deemed efficient and set for reforms, including a possible new central plant to replace the current “firetrap” facility.
