CAB Rejects Airline Fare Reduction Plan

The Civil Aeronautics Board rejected Eastern Airlines fare reductions hours before they would take effect. The proposals included a 30 percent southern travel discount with advance ticket hotel package and a weekend fare for Florida travelers to northern and midwestern cities. Competing carriers criticized the plan as unfair and potentially ruinous to rivals. The CAB also denied group discounts for tour operators, prompting regret from tourism spokesmen. In Burma, President Ne Win returned from a China trip as insurgent clashes in the northeast continued with Chinese-led troops involved.
