Rudolf Abel, once the top Soviet spy in the United States, died of lung cancer at 68 in Moscow. Active from 1948 to 1957, he was exchanged for U2 pilot Francis Gary Powers in 1962. Abel operated from Brooklyn posing as a photographer and artist, using coded drops and hollowed coins to hide film. He lived quietly in a $35-a-month room across from the Brooklyn federal district courthouse where he was tried in 1957.
The United States ends an urgent review of Middle East arms needs and decides Israel should not receive new Phantom warplanes for now. State Department spokesman Charles W. Bray cites Soviet restraint in arming Egypt and says no significant shift in the arms balance warrants Phantom deliveries.
