U S Navy Skyhawks bombed Haiphong Shipyard No 2 near the city center for the first time in the Vietnam War. The hit yard lies on the Tram Bac river close to essential docks. No immediate damage estimate given. In Vietnam ground fighting saw 177 Americans killed and 761 wounded last week, while enemy deaths fell to 1 802. U S troop strength in Vietnam reached about 470 000.
Washington sources say General Westmoreland will seek faster deployment of troops already authorized to 525,000 by July 1, without seeking a larger overall cap. He plans talks with President Johnson and top aides, including Bunker, Rusk, McNamara, Wheeler, Helms, Rostow, and Komer, about maintaining pressure while opposing a bombing pause in North Vietnam.
A shabby Panama City peddler was arrested on suspicion of being Heinrich Mueller, Hitler's Gestapo chief, while fingerprints were sent to West Berlin for comparison. The man claimed to be Francis Willard Keith, a U S citizen born in Webb City Missouri, but authorities doubted his identity. A Berliner Morgenpost report showed Mueller’s ex wife saying it could be him, while Panama City investigators noted a strong resemblance but could not confirm.
U.S. Steel to raise wire and rail materials prices by under 3 percent effective Nov. 27 amid a year of boosts as Phelps Dodge plans a four cent per pound rise on tube products. The Fed cites a second monthly drop in industrial output due to strikes and reduced oil production.
In Boston and much of New England a heavy snowstorm stranded drivers, left vehicles abandoned on highways, and delayed commutes for hours.
