In Los Angeles area story from AP, Tony Hewitt 8, Tony’s toy poodle Peaches 10 months old was abducted by two teens. A $25 ransom was paid to an anonymous youth who returned the dog, with Tony’s parents praising the safe return but seeking arrests for other dog thefts.
Raleigh AP report quotes Gov. Sanford declining to defend or condemn the Harmony American Legion Bunny Bop rabbit hunt set for December 16. He says the issue is not in the governor’s jurisdiction and that he won’t tell Harmony residents how to proceed amid protests reaching the Kennedy White House and letters to state officials.
The American Public Health Association elected Dr. J. W. R. Norton North Carolina’s state health director as president elect at its annual meeting in Detroit. Norton will take the presidency at the next annual meeting in Miami Florida.
The Air Force plans a 30 000 acre lease hold bombing range in Hyde County North Carolina to support jet training. The site lies five miles south of Engelhard with opposition from state officials wildlife agencies and local legislators citing impact on Mattamuskeet refuge and regional concerns.
Gov. Sanford said state institutions will report urgent needs for new facilities and he will seek a reasonable solution. He noted voters defeated $61.6 million in state bond issues for facilities while urging reductions to urgent needs and considering a special session. He also asked the State Ports Authority to study issuing revenue bonds to expand Wilmington and Morehead City ports.
Governor Sanford called for a thorough review of North Carolina's small loan law enacted after heated debate in 1963. He said the law favored large operators and should be examined carefully to protect independent lenders and borrowers who may be harmed. He also expressed neutral views on veto power and single term limits for governors.
The Baptist State Convention moved to study a proposal to abolish capital punishment after the Resolution Committee recommendation. Wake Forest students urged a ban while leaders called for more study. The convention also authorized Campbell and Wake Forest colleges to borrow up to 700000 for capital improvements. Abney Mills officials in Greenwood South Carolina would not comment on a report from Erwin Mills that Abney is considering selling its Erwin stock. Abney owns about 40 percent of Erwin stock, a stake acquired years ago. William H. Ruffin president of Erwin Mills said the sale is possible to settle an estate and notified Erwin stockholders by letter.
President Kennedy and Mrs Kennedy join the nation in mourning the death of Speaker Sam Rayburn. Tributes pour from Capitol, officials, and both parties as the country grieves the longtime Democrat. Rayburn died in Bonham Texas after a West Coast trip announcement.
Sam Rayburn, veteran House speaker, died in Bonham Texas at age nearly 80. Doctors said he passed away quietly after a cancer battle and unconsciousness for about 36 hours. Funeral plans set for Bonham First Baptist Church with Rayburn library memorial and possible attendance by President Kennedy.
Former wife of George Huntington Hartford II marries Dudley Sutton in London civil ceremony. She notes losing about 60 000 dollars yearly alimony and plans to commute to see her two Hartford children while London becomes home.
The second storm in three days swept across New Mexico Texas and neighboring states bringing blizzard conditions on the plains. Up to three feet of snow covered storm areas and eight deaths were linked to the wintry weather. Roads froze and highways turned slick as fresh snow piled up in New Mexico Oklahoma and Colorado.
