Wartime Department Store Tale on Tin Salvage and Morale

Civilian morale in wartime Washington is linked to everyday acts like returning old toothpaste tubes. The Tin Salvage Institute reports 1,168,000 pounds of metal tubes reclaimed, with half a million pounds of tin allocated to war industries. Tubes provide tin for soldering in aircraft and contribute aluminum and lead for the war effort. The tube-for-tube order halted manufacture on April 1, 1942, with an average tube life about 15 months.
