Shanghai dispatch reports Japanese forces threatening China’s Hindenburg Line as they push toward Soochow and Nanking. Soochow endured over 700 bombs in 30 hours while Nanking braces for defense amid a civilian Exodus and ongoing government presence.
The United States Mexico and Cuba offered mediation to resolve the Haiti Dominican Republic dispute. President Stenior Vincent of Haiti requested mediation and Roosevelt conveyed the offer to Dominican President Trujillo expressing trust that he would welcome the step.
High Point dentists join the Third District Dental Society meeting in Greensboro. Dr. J. B. Richardson will present on Amalgam, with Dr. W. R. McKaughan serving as secretary treasurer. Others named sit on committees for arrangements entertainment audit by laws and nominations.
The Brussels conference adopted a declaration criticizing Japan and summarizing the Far Eastern conflict. Italy voted no, three Scandinavian nations abstained, and a copy was not sent to the Japanese government. The declaration was prepared by United States British and French delegates.
The 107th annual session of the North Carolina State Baptist convention begins at First Baptist Church in Wilmington with about 1,000 delegates expected. Dr. W. L. Poteat misses opening due to illness. Dr. J. Allen Easley will read his address. Proceedings include topics on funding Baptist colleges hospitals and orphanages and retirement allowances for ministers over 65.
A Milwaukee Road football special carrying nearly 200 Beloit students wrecked after hitting a stalled car near Morton Grove. Fireman Henry G. Timmer, 1, died from injuries after being pinned under the tender. Most students, largely girls returning from a Saturday game, were lightly hurt and continued home two hours later.
The Supreme Court rejected three new challenges to Justice Hugo L. Black’s eligibility. Florida corporations lost a second bid for rehearing claiming Black was unqualified. The court denied disqualification petitions by Ryan Florida corporation and others and also refused permission to file a brief questioning Black’s oath.
Basil Pat Ryan of New York said in an interview at Hickory that he does not remember a marriage ceremony on November 4 with Martha Barkley, a 19 year old from Morganton, casting doubt on the reported nuptials.
Pasil Ryan, 30, grandson of the late Thomas Fortune Ryan, was discharged from a Hickory hospital today a few hours after his surprise marriage to Martha Barkley of Morganton. He and attorney W A Self met reporters seeking an interview, following a 10 day hospital stay for a gastro intestinal ailment.
Ned A. Parks, 24, identified as alleged father of a two month old son born to Martha Barkley Ryan in Washington Evening Star report. Parks worked as a soda clerk at a capital drug store. The warrant issued by Burke County sheriff names him. Ryan, 28, New York copper heir, married the mother in North Carolina after knowing her two days.
Fifteen survivors of the Greek freighter Chandris disaster arrived in Norfolk aboard a coast guard cutter and told how the band of seamen fought the sea. The captain, George Coufopandelis, and fourteen others perished. one man went mad and bit the captain. A shark attacked others as they clung to wreckage.
Insurgent sources say Generalissimo Franco plans a first drive on Almeria with an eastward push toward Aragon front. Government forces claim strengthened defenses and readiness to meet all Franco throws. Madrid women protest as police arrest 650 during a march near a new defense line.
High Point prepares a two day Red Cross Roll Call to enroll new members starting tomorrow at 9 AM. Over 200 workers will canvass residential, business, industrial and school sectors with headquarters at 203 South Main Street led by Mrs. E T Harrison and Mrs Annette D Coltrane. Public booths will operate at the Sheraton Elwood and post office Tuesday and Wednesday from 6:30 AM to 6 PM.
Bird authorities from the United States and Canada gather in Charleston on November 16 for the 1937 annual convention of the American Ornithologists Union. The program features about 50 lectures papers addresses and film demonstrations. Delegates will visit the Cape Romain bird sanctuary on Friday.
Northwest Washington communities reopened highway connections after two days of isolation by snowdrifts. A storm from Saturday to Sunday morning dumped eight inches at Bellingham and 15 at Port Angeles. Snowbound conditions eased with four inches reported at Fort Benton, Montana.

Washington November 15. The second session of the 75th Congress convened today on pure hearsay and without formal notice to members. Parliamentarian Lewis Deschler explained that members merely see the president’s proclamation in a newspaper or learn of the meeting from others. Historically, late arrivals have occurred due to lack of notice for openings.
In Chicago on November 15 authorities announced a month of coordinated action by medical staff and federal agents had eradicated all traceable quantities of sulfanilamide elixir. J O Clarke of the FDA said about 200 gallons shipped from Bristol Tennessee and 40 gallon lots from Kansas City had been traced, leaving only a few ounces to itinerants or unlocatable buyers.
Postal carriers will deliver registration cards to every home in the city as part of a nationwide unemployment census. President Roosevelt announced the effort by radio, with 16 000 local committees assisting. City leaders named Dr. BE H Blackard as chairman and four centers were set up to help residents complete cards.
