Governor weighs highway tax and state maintenance plan
Governor Gardner and the Highway Commission debate funding for state or county maintenance of all highways. A potential 1 cent gasoline tax rise could push county road costs to about 5 million dollars annually, while a dual or full state maintenance plan faces tax and policy questions. Gardner aims to cut prison upkeep via expanded prison labor on highways and may seek legislation mandating its use in all highway work.
