A 5,000,000 cubic foot Equitable Gas tank exploded in Pittsburgh injuring over 5600 and killing at least 21 with 50 more missing. Coroner and state investigators probe the blast while rescue crews search debris near Reedsdale and Fontella streets.
Cincinnati Nov 15 AP George Remus won the right to question veniremen on October 6 mental status as legal issue in his life sentence trial for shooting his second wife Imogene Holmes Remus. The dispute involved juror selection and Remus’s insistence on participating in his defense without prejudicing the panel.
Justice Frederick Siddons orders an investigation to determine if criminal contempt of the District of Columbia Supreme Court occurred in the Fall Sinclair juror surveillance scandal. He names Gordon Lashey, James Easby-Smith, and John E. Laskey to conduct the inquiry and pursue charges if warranted.
Chairman Madden plans to press President Coolidge to boost air defenses in the canal zone after an inspection trip. Henry Ford named defendant in a $6,000,000 chancery suit filed in Pontiac Michigan by Henry M. Leland and son Wilfred C. Leland on behalf of about 2,000 Lincoln Motor stockholders. The action arises from a 1922 sale of Lincoln to Ford and seeks trust or personal liability for invested amounts plus 5 percent interest. The Lelands claim Ford failed to honor a verbal stock-buyback agreement and request remedies against Ford and the merged Lincoln entities. The case could go to trial within about ninety days after service.
President Coolidge opposes reducing tariffs as a method to help U S farmers. He emphasized the tariff should not be altered before reviewing the Nagel commission findings, arguing changes could hurt farmers rather than assist them.
State board of charities reports 7,486 persons in five institutions. Of these 5,338 were insane, 1,580 in state prison, 548 at Caswell School. Morganton housed 2,248 insane, Raleigh 1,641, Goldsboro 1,540. Census Bureau for first annual institutional statistics.

Cold weather swept into Kansas and western Missouri last night after a summer thunder shower. Temperatures dropped from the 60s to freezing or below with a reported low of 30 in Kansas City. Marion county grand jury reports evidence of political crimes, but the statute of limitations bars action. Special Assistant Prosecutors John W. Holtzman and Emsley W. Johnson stated this in a final report submitted today in Indianapolis.

In Pittsburgh on November 15 AP reports: three of sixteen workers who were to repair the tank did not report to work, while the other thirteen are believed dead. A Pittsburgh Clay Pot employee narrowly missed the blast by 13 minutes, and a north side resident repairing a car escaped by 13 minutes as his vehicle’s shadowed area was destroyed.
William A. Lovett, clerk of the Randolph Superior Court, died after a curve crash near Morrison bridge. He had been an internal revenue collector and was a nephew of congressman W. C. Hammer. Funeral services will be held at Asheboro Methodist Protestant church with Asheboro bar members as honorary pallbearers.
Lavish honors await a child who aided a Confederate veteran or widow during the year. The United Daughters of the Confederacy meet in Charleston with a three foot tall silver loving cup as first annual award, gifted by Miss Katie Daffan of Ennis Texas in memory of her mother Mollie Day Daffan. Registration begins as delegates arrive and the city displays Confederate flags.
A warrant for murder was issued for Alex Schreiber in the slaying of Herbert O Meisterknecht an inventor and former naval officer. Measured evidence shows five gunshots heard during a phone call from Elizabeth to Highlands. A man named Schreiber reportedly admitted the act to a lobster fisherman and fled with a companion.
