New Department Urged Today for U S Education
Washington November 15 Representatives of the national education association and about twenty other organizations urged President Coolidge at a White House conference to recommend to Congress the establishment of a department of education with a cabinet secretary. They called for federal aid to combat illiteracy and promote Americanization of foreign-born, teacher training, physical education, health service, and the Towner Sterling education bill. George D. Strayer of Columbia University spoke for the delegation and argued for leadership by a secretary of education with a national council of education and state representatives. The president said the matter would be considered by Congress under the administration reorganization plan and that he supported moves approved by educational leaders.

In Danville Virginia Judge Daniel Price Withers upheld the Virginia tobacco marketing law and dissolved a 90 day restraining order against the Tobacco Growers Co operative Marketing Association. Chicago barber turned banker sentenced in Atlanta case
Joseph B. Marcino of Chicago rose from barber to banker and faced many financial difficulties nationwide. He was sentenced to four years and three months in the federal penitentiary at Atlanta by Judge Morton after pleading guilty to aiding in misapplication of $200,000 from the First National Bank of Warren Massachusetts last February.
