Kennedy arrives in Miami for unity talks with Vice President Nixon as he plans cabinet roles and possible appointments. Salinger notes no final decisions before Thanksgiving. Ribicoff and Johnson trips outlined in schedule.
Guatemala's President Miguel Ydigoras declared a 30 day siege as paratroop and bomber units hit rebel strongholds in Puerto Barrios and Zacapa. Casualties reported among rebel and government forces, with Havana denying meddling and Somoza blaming Cuba for unrest in Nicaragua.
A University of Pennsylvania team led by M. Abedini proposes silicon based life forms on unseen planets. They report new silicon containing compounds analogous to carbon compounds and suggest vitamins and hormones could be produced from sandy substances in the future.
In Leopoldville President Cleophas Kamitatu announces full agreement with Col. Joseph Mobutu to maintain order in the capital. The move marks a setback for ex-Premier Patrice Lumumba, who remains isolated under United Nations guard as Kamitatu’s 2000-strong police force had backed Lumumba. Kamitatu suspends publication of Solidarite Africaine, his semiweekly paper that attacked Mobutu and President Kassavu.
Russell McCabe wounded his estranged wife in a Fayetteville sandwich shop on Person Street before shooting himself. Detective Captain Malcolm Shaw heard two shots, saw Mrs. Sarah McCabe wounded and the suspect with a rifle, and McCabe died by self-inflicted gunshot. Mrs. McCabe was hospitalized with a chest and arm wound, condition listed as fair.
Ferd inand Stoj escaped a six hour confinement by periodically releasing air from a spare tire after being sealed in a car trunk by gunmen. Night watchman Patrick Holland suffocated in a separate trunk as thieves stole $100 from an office safe.
Treasury agents busted a nationwide art smuggling ring bringing Chinese objects into the United States. The haul included an 800 year old Hui Tsung scroll valued at 65 000 and a 12th century Birds and Flowers painting valued at 25 000. Objects were found in the Ct loo Galleries in Manhattan and at the Cleveland Museum and Freer Gallery in Washington. The operation involved Frank Caro J D Chen and others with ties to Hong Kong and Boston Museum records.
The Kennedy transition team sparked ongoing speculation that North Carolina Governor Luther Hodges would become Secretary of Commerce. Officials cautioned no cabinet decision would be announced before Thanksgiving, while Hodges denied knowledge of any appointment.
U S marshals accompanied four Negro girls into two white schools in New Orleans amid boos and cautious police presence. At Vandenberg progress reports say Discoverer XVII will eject its capsule today after extended space time for good behavior. The 25 foot Agena B rocket will release the capsule over the North Pole area with a parachute recovery planned near Hawaiian waters.
The AP survey shows a Democratic resurgence in the 1960 South with Kennedy leading in 11 Southern states and Nixon losing ground. Kennedy secured 5,041,905 votes (52.3%) to Nixon’s 4,602,166 (47.7%), aided by Johnson’s selection and regional dynamics.

Heath Kluttz, a 50 year old Albemarle surveyor for Carolina Power & Light, was found dead in the Pee Dee River after going missing Sunday during a boat surveying expedition. One boat was missing and the other partly unlashed, suggesting an attempt to swim. The Stanly County Rescue Squad recovered the outboard boat at 2 a.m., out of fuel but undamaged.
The nuclear submarine George Washington sails Tuesday on its first war deterrent patrol with 16 Polaris missiles. The sub will patrol the Atlantic with a 1 200 mile range, and Vice Admiral Grenfell will give a good sailing address. The ship uses two crews and missiles were loaded at the Polaris facility in Charleston. A similar submarine, Patrick Henry, is due next year.
A Trailways bus carrying 40 sailors and one soldier left a foggy curve and plunged into a creek in Smithfield Virginia. Three passengers were in critical condition, 27 taken to a nearby Suffolk hospital, 13 examined locally, and no fatalities reported. The bus traveled south from Washington D C toward Norfolk.
