Oklahoma urges delay in school desegregation ruling impact
Oklahoma Attorney General Mac Q Williamson asked the Supreme Court to consider the state’s financial hurdles in implementing desegregation. He argued changeover would take time and urged the court to account for funding and constitutional limits as it plans how the May ruling should be enacted. He cited separate white and Negro systems and the need for amendments and new financing measures. He noted district taxes fund white schools and county taxes fund others, expecting gradual change by next June.
