Durkin suspected in crime spree with letter and clothing found
The recovered blue overcoat and gray suit coat with a Kansas City label bore shotgun tears and bloodstains linking them to Durkin. A dark plaid cap lay nearby and a prison escape on October 29 tied to Lloyd Austin and Sergeant Harry Gray's death. Durkin had killed federal agent Edward Shanahan during an earlier arrest attempt on October 11. A twelve page letter expressed remorse and love for his mother and Mrs Betty Werner, with plans to start anew. Mrs Werner was released after Durkin's escape. The note ends with crime won’t pay and a wish to die in the lake rather than a basement like a rat.

Auto thief Durkin may have died by own action hoax
Chicago reports Martin J. Durkin an automobile thief and slayer may have drowned in the Chicago river or staged a death by own action hoax with bloodstained clothing and a farewell letter to his mother. His sister Lucille identified the clothes and handwriting on the Michigan boulevard bridge as his as coast guards searched the river all night. Police doubt the claimed intention to end it all given his bullet wound and desperation.
