Lumber Ship Carnelian-1 Sinks Off Pacific Rescue Efforts Continue
In the Pacific amid severe storms the lumber carrier Carnelian-1 sank after its deckload broke loose. Crewmen clung to logs and life rafts as rescuers from the Hunter, Wisteria, and air units battled 20 foot seas about 1,400 miles northwest of Honolulu. The Shunyo Guard cutter was en route from Alaska. Coast Guard planes dropped survival kits and six rubber rafts while weather worsened. The Mitsui OSK Line owned the Carnelian-1 ship. 33 crew members were aboard with several rescued and many remaining unaccounted for as dawn approached.
