Brazil named 66 year old Ramos interim president after a pre dawn coup led by Gen Lott ousted Carlos Da Luz. Navy and air force wavered before accepting Ramos amid harbor gunfire. Santos harbor garrison briefly restricted Luz supporters while Rio reports cite censorship and military hesitation.
A gunman known as a major figure in manhunts was condemned to death for the murder of Detective William J. Carpenter and is charged with slaying a radio disc jockey. He behaved violently in court, resisting bailiffs, while his defense argued insanity. A state psychiatrist found him psychopathic but with a sense of right and wrong.

Gantar praised his crew and nearby destroyers Yarnal and Ingersoll for trapping the fire and preventing disaster.
Rieve predicted a strong merger will boost textile unionization with AFL support and raise political influence in state and national spheres. He warned wages in the unorganized industry lag behind other sectors over the past five to six years. Delegates are expected from Carolina states, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi.

L Stacy Weaver of Durham, chair of the Governor's Commission on Revision of the Public School Laws, opposes abolishing public schools. Speaking at the North Carolina Education Association meeting in Winston-Salem, he warned that ending public schools would be a tragic consequence deriding past progress and leaving future generations to blame absent defenders.
North Carolina primary highways averaged 86 076 vehicles per day in October, a rise from the previous year. The State Highway Commission noted the gain aligns with a 0.75 percent rise in vehicle registrations this year, totaling 1 577 604 registered vehicles statewide. Secondary roads also showed a traffic increase of about 1 percent.
Washington says Israel has a slim chance of U.S. weapons without agreeing to UN plans to end border strife at El Ouja. Burns proposes Israel and Egypt withdraw troops, submit to inspection, and seek a fixed boundary. Israel has not formally replied but expects a response. Canada discussed as an alternative supplier.
