Pfc Gilmer Whitaker of Surry County is home on a ten day furlough after five months in Richmond s Ampy Hospital recovering from eleven wounds from combat in Italy. He served eleven months overseas including the Anzio landing and 101 days on the fighting front in Italy. He was wounded during the drive toward Rome and praised the Red Cross for aid. Whitaker holds the Expert Infantry and Combat Badges and the Purple Heart. He will report to Moore Hospital Asheville after his furlough for a final medical exam before resuming active duty.
