Foreign rivals target the American home furnishings market as imports climb to two percent of production and exports fall. Lawrence H. Whiting warns of immediate and long term competition, noting luxury goods and hand labor items face the sharpest foreign pressure.
Raleigh report states there is no discrimination against Negroes in the operation of public schools. The State board of education contends the suit against the board and members, including Lt. Gov. H. P. Taylor and Dr. Clyde A. Edwin, is essentially a suit against the State.
Western Electric plants in Winston Salem and Burlington elected the CIO Communications Workers of America as their bargaining agent. The AFL International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers placed second. CIO won 871 votes, AFL 541, and 98 ballots resulted in no union. Club funds show 36 percent spent on retail purchases and 31 percent moved to permanent savings with the rest flowing to home improvements and durable goods.
Marshall College president Dr. Stewart H. Smith told the West Virginia Education Association Convention that comic books Be Bop and anemic soap operas fuel an age of triviality. He blamed radio for blood curdling crime shows and said readers consume 20 million comic books weekly.

Raleigh reports steady flue-cured leaf trading with mixed $1 to $3 moves across old and middle belts. Wednesday gross sales reached 2,395,847 pounds at $44.14 average on the old belt and 631,950 pounds at $46.17 on the middle belt. Eastern Carolina markets sold 180,684 pounds at $46.74 as Armistice Day halted all markets.
Nathaniel A Dunn Jr. a Raleigh businessman connected with Oak City laundry died early today while visiting a son at school in Waynesboro Virginia. The death was reported from Raleigh with Dunn described as a local business figure and resident.
In Libedoun, Alexander county, five year old Donald Little was instantly killed when a school bus ran over him late Thursday. Local authorities reported the accident occurred in the Libedoun section.
