Harris Survey Shows Americans Split on Vietnam Protests
Louis Harris reports that a national poll shows Americans divided over antiwar protests. Forty five to thirty nine percent sympathize with demonstrators while a 51 to 36 percent majority disapprove protest methods. Half believe the protests threaten peace talks yet 50 percent see merit in opposing war as morally indefensible. The survey, taken Oct 18 to 22 among 1771 people, highlights regional divides and support concentrated in urban East and West areas with under 30s and college-educated groups more favorable.
