A reader asks why Negro history isn’t offered and whether it can be. The response critiques the idea as a politicized, profit driven course and notes that no other American group has a separate public school history. It says Americans can access books on any group in libraries and that American history touches all peoples.
A school rumor that draftees must serve three or four years after the new year is unfounded. The actual service length remains two years for all branches, including Marines or Navy on special request, and Army per normal procedure.
Mrs. M asks what is included in the state required auto inspection at the regular fee. Al Newton says the fee is $1.50 with no extra charge, notes a poster listing items to be checked must be displayed, and warns to report inspectors who fail to display it. The partial list includes lights, signals, brakes, steering, horn, wipers, and tires with exhaust possibly added later.
City officials report Westchester Drive will receive widened shoulders and a state funded asphalt and concrete overlay from Johnson Street to English Road. Work is planned to begin next spring after a conference with State Highway Dept officials. Carl will continue pothole repairs in the interim to avoid wasting public funds.
In Wednesday ABC returns coverage The Enterprise called precincts 12 and 18 the Bible Belt. The message thanks the paper for the compliment and notes pride in being associated with those precincts.
In Biscayne Bay Nixon promised vice president elect Spiro Agnew a wide set of duties at home and abroad with an office near Nixon. He ruled out overseas action before the inauguration without President Johnson's approval and said any pre-inaugural representation would be cleared with Johnson and Secretary Rusk.
The 1st Armored Air Cavalry Division, an 18,000-man unit, moved from the north to 50 to 70 miles northwest of Saigon to pressure an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 enemy troops massed along invasion routes. In several days of action it has killed 109 North Vietnamese with U.S. losses at six killed and 40 wounded. The division is not yet fully operational but will use 300 helicopters to deploy troops and artillery in Tay Ninh, Binh Long and Phuoc Long provinces. The move follows a decision by Gen. Creighton Abrams to shift forces south as the threat near the zone diminished.
A strong quake centered in southern Illinois rattled 19 states from Minnesota to Georgia, felt by millions with swaying buildings and minor damage reported. Officials pegged magnitude around 5.5, with epicenter near the Illinois-Indiana line.
In Brooklyn East New York, a Yemen-born father Ahmed Rageh Namer, 46, and his son Abdo Ahmed Namer, 20, were arrested by city police and Secret Service on conspiracy to murder President-elect Richard M Nixon. Authorities seized an M1 rifle, a carbine, 24 shells, two switchblades, and a carving knife during the afternoon raid. Police questioned two nephews. no charges filed. The elder Namer had lived in the U S 13 years, never naturalized. the son arrived two years ago from Yemen. They formerly resided in Rada.
In Washington officials sensed undercurrents of optimism about reviving the Paris peace talks despite South Vietnam's refusal to seat the National Liberation Front. Key meetings between U S envoy Bunker and South Vietnamese leaders occurred as Thieu proposed two sided talks with the NLF as part of Hanoi’s delegation, while Saigon argued the NLF is Hanoi's tool. North Vietnam is suspected to honor the DMZ ceasefire, but My Tho suffered a missile strike amid ongoing lower level attacks causing civilian casualties.
Washington AP chair man Wilbur Mills of the Ways and Means Committee warned against tax cuts coupled with higher spending. He said such steps would create an unmanageable deficit in fiscal 1970 and noted Nixon proposals on surtax expiry, tax credits, and military spending. Mills stressed his panel’s focus on expenditure control regardless of politics. He avoided specific comment on Nixon ideas for credits for job training pollution controls and education expenses.
