New York observances marked the first anniversary of the great northeast power failure. At 5 27 p m on November 9, 1965 the lights went out. up to 13 hours of darkness affected 30 million people in seven states and two Canadian provinces. Citizens held candlelight dinners and remembered the outage.
In a vast midterm shift Republicans gain 47 House seats and at least eight governors, boosting control in 25 states and 290 electoral votes. Nixon calls the results a sharp rebuff to LBJ, while Goldwater cites an LBJ backlash amid anti-Johnson sentiment from Florida to California.
An American patrol of the 1st Infantry Division was attacked in Tay Ninh Province by Viet Cong using a nonpoisonous tear gas. About 30 troops faced gas, 1,200 grenades were found, and no injuries were reported. The week’s fighting raised American casualties to 127 killed and 605 wounded.
West Germany’s Christian Democratic Union selected Kurt Georg Kiesinger as its candidate to replace Chancellor Ludwig Erhard. On the final ballot Kiesinger won 137 votes, with Schroeder 81 and Barzel 26, and now must seek cross party support to form a majority in the Bundestag.

John Smalley Samuel Choice and Robert Gissendanner were found guilty of rape and given automatic death sentences with no mercy recommended. The victim, 18, testified they forced her into a car and assaulted her at an empty house on the night of January 13.
