English Language in Catholic Mass Advocated by Vernacular Society
Col. John K. Ross-Duggan leads efforts backed by the Vernacular Society to introduce national languages into Catholic worship, arguing Latin could be replaced for parts of the Mass. The aim is to enable laity to participate more actively, with bishops split on the change yet many supporting vernacular use for the opening prayers and readings. The group, centered in Chicago and Long Beach, has about 2,000 members and seeks Vatican approval for revised liturgical practice.

N Speer Jones analyzes origins and dignity of man using Genesis Psalm and Matthew. He discusses debates sparked by Darwin and the Scopes trial, noting fossil finds date back hundreds of thousands of years yet no written records earlier than 6000 B C and Toynbee’s timeline. He explains three Psalm sections on identity, dignity, and praise, and clarifies Matthew’s meaning about not worrying for tomorrow.
