Montreal apartment blaze leaves at least twenty dead

A four story brick building on Saint Mathieu Street in Montreal suffered a fast moving fire possibly started by a gas stove explosion. Authorities recovered eight bodies with many residents unaccounted for among about 100 tenants and two hours into the blaze. Witnesses recalled screams and mothers with infants as firemen battled the flames and a man saved his child by tossing him to bushes below.

Jordan King Hussein's plane attacked by MIGs near Damascus

Jordan's King Hussein said Soviet-made MIGs of the United Arab Republics attacked his jet 15 miles from Damascus during a Europe trip. He returned toward Amman after six raids, summoned a special cabinet meeting, and was greeted with a 21 gun salute on landing.

Missing plane near Cape St Vincent with 36 aboard

A U S Navy search plane picked up a faint distress signal 180 miles west of Cape St Vincent from a Portuguese flying boat missing with 36 aboard including six Americans. The aircraft was en route Lisbon to Madeira when it radioed an emergency landing at sea. Oil slicks were seen but no wreckage. Names include Leon Lazarus Kohlmann and Jane Kohlmann of New Orleans, Louis Slater and Dorothy Slater, Henry Rennell of Southport, and George Long of Far East assignment.
