In early returns Wilson gains momentum as New Hampshire shifts from Hughes to Wilson, raising his statewide total while four other states remain doubtful. Officials warn incomplete counts and possible corrections may alter final electoral tallies.
Henry Morgenthau Jr in New York stated Democrats would demand a recount in New Hampshire despite early figures showing a 93 vote lead for Wilson and a 600 vote Democratic margin. He said the complex situation requires a recount and that instructions to the state committee had already been sent.
In Fargo North Dakota a late tally from 1,687 of 1,859 precincts reduced President Wilson's lead by over 200 votes. The report shows Wilson 51,474 Hughes 50,772 as the update before noon.
San Francisco reports that 5364 of 5917 precincts counted show Hughes 436,839 and Wilson 441,262, a Wilson lead of 4,523 votes statewide.
Santa Fe reports heavy Democratic pockets in Kiddy and Roosevelt counties missing from returns. Ballots in remote sections closed at midnight and cannot yield further data. Seven former Democratic counties and six normally Republican ones are still unreported, along with two marginal districts. Many areas lack telephone or telegraph service.
Fragmentary election results report Hughes ahead in several states as returns trickle in from numerous precincts. Early tallies show Hughes with notable totals in Minnesota and West Virginia while other states report partial counts awaiting final results.
Unofficial returns from multiple states show William Howard Taft or Wilson and Hughes leading in various counties and precincts. In New Mexico Hughes trails narrowly as 336 of 633 precincts report, while California totals show Hughes and Wilson close with Wilson leading by a slim margin.
Concord New Hampshire Nov 9 With two precincts missing the count shows Wilson ahead by 121 on verified returns from 23 percent of precincts and press returns from 54 percent Secretary Bean corrected earlier statements noting possible changes as more districts report. A misreported ward result was corrected and officials warn that small errors could alter the statewide outcome. The Democratic committee had sought a recount while Hughes once led.
Scattered returns from remote sections show Woodrow Wilson leading Charles Hughes in the presidential race. Early tallies give Wilson 251 electoral votes to Hughes 242 with 23 votes needed to win. Delays loom as north west telephones fail and courier reports push final results into tonight.
Concord reports partial certification giving Hughes 43 752 and Wilson 43 849 with Wilson holding a 117 vote plurality as the secretary of state completes counts.
A Democratic state committee member stated that figures checked through the night show California favoring Wilson, with Los Angeles County contributing a lead for Hughes and the state verdict likely decided by about 500 votes in Wilson’s favor.
A box car derailed last night at the Main Street Southern crossing while being shifted from a manufacturing plant to the freight yards. The crew re-railed the car without outside assistance.
Paris reports a German assault on the Somme front last night was repulsed after a brief clash. Artillery was active through the night as British forces advance further. In the east, Russian forces under Field Marshal von Mackensen push into Dobruja, driving back detachments and gaining ground southward.
Nov 9 report from Hherlin states Sayvilla-Gheran artillery repelled multiple French and British probing advances on the Somme front, as the war office announced today.
Industrial officials report daily inquiries from across the region about High Point's labor demand. Three letters say one to three families might move here if homes are available, with five woodworkers ready to come immediately if housing and jobs exist. Factories operate at or near capacity and new mills planned for early next year will worsen the housing shortage. Local efforts aim to build enough houses to house arriving workers, estimated at about 200 jobs but lacking homes.

Weather forecast notes increasing clouds tonight with local rain Friday and cooler temperatures. Moderate variable winds reported.
The Enterprise reports Democrats swept the county ticket from senator to surveyor with large margins for register of deeds and county treasurer. Republicans gained in some precincts but failed to win any official seat in Guilford. Major Stedman leads Grissom for Congress by about 1,000 in the county and near 3,000 district wide. The state vote appears heavily Democratic though official totals await final count. President Wilson carried Gifford County with strong showings for governor and other candidates.
