Dean Poul of North Carolina urged harmony to smooth divisions as Democrats aim to organize the House with a three seat plurality over Republicans. He warned against bickering over chairmanships and assignments and backed seniority adjustments to secure cooperation.
The Arkansas death of United States Senator Thaddeus H. Caraway triggers a special election under state law. had he lived two more days his seat could have been filled by appointment. The 60 year old firebrand who rose from northeastern Arkansas to the Senate was hailed as a fierce debater and sharp analyst. Joe T. Robinson leads funeral plans with the Arkansas delegation accompanying the body to Jonesboro for Monday services.
Georgia Bulldog football stretched its win streak to seven as they narrowly defeated Violet of N. U. 7–6 before 63 000 at Yankee Stadium. Duke upset Kentucky 7–0 while Tulane crushed Auburn 27–0 and Alabama routed Florida 41–0 amid other state showdowns.
Japan rejects the League of Nations plan to withdraw troops from Manchuria by November 16. In a note to Aristide Briand the Japanese government says troops will stay until China assures safety for Japanese subjects and respects Nippon’s rights. It cites five fundamental principles including territorial integrity and protection of nationals.
In Ybor City officers clashed with a crowd at a labor temple during a Soviet anniversary demonstration. Patrolman J N Byrd was shot, Sergeant D R Wilson hit, 15 people arrested, and Carlos Lazana charged with carrying a concealed weapon and assault with intent to murder.
Two coast guard boats rushed to help the packet Arthur E. James reported in distress 40 miles off Nantucket with 50 passengers aboard. The sailing vessel from Cape Verde to New Bedford, overdue 65 days, left no word until the William J. Collins relayed its plight. Destroyer Tucker and cutter Acushnet sailed 100 miles to reach the stricken boat.
In Greensboro the Carolina theater was robbed at about 8 30 pm by a lone bandit who escaped in a car with license 136 192. Manager E W Street said only a small sum was taken as money was moved to a safety box quickly. Ticket girl Miss Anne McKinney kept a roll of large bills hidden while handing over one dollar bills.
Governor O Max Gardner announced he asked the federal farm board to send a representative to the four state economic conference in Charlotte. North Carolina will coordinate with Virginia South Carolina Georgia on agricultural rehabilitation and data gathering for the meeting.
Ralph Capone, Chicago gangland figure and brother of Al Capone, entered Leavenworth to begin a three year term for income tax evasion. He shed his flashy image for a prison uniform and will undergo intake routines and quarantine as authorities determine his assignment.
Forest fires raged in Burke and McDowell counties while Lenoir and Jones counties faced spreading flames in Pocosin woods. Burgaw crews contained grass fires near Wilmington as a lumber shed and one dwelling burned for about eight thousand dollars. Governor Gardner urged extreme care to prevent further blazes.
In Cincinnati on November 7 a Big Four passenger train struck and killed three children trapped on a trestle. Hazel Prater aged 7 Gladys Prater aged 10 and Maxine Vance aged 8 died after they moved to the edge as the locomotive approached. Toys scattered along the track.
Conservative delegates heard Dr Clyde R Miller of Columbia University condemn the modern high school system as he urged scrapping core cultural subjects to teach students to grapple with present and future reality. Dr Paul Monroe attacked tariff policy as backward and warned of impacts on global affairs.
A jury appointed by President Hoover found Gardiner’s pamphlet accusing the administration’s naval policy contained numerous inaccuracies. It rejected claims of secret Anglo-American agreements and misrepresented efforts toward the London naval conference and treaty interpretations. The 10,000 word report opposed Gardiner’s six main assertions.
