Dana Rutledge an 11 year old skydiver died when his main chute failed to open during a jump from 3200 feet near Manassas Virginia. His father Carl Rutledge a patent office classifier led the jump and noted the emergency chute opened but did not blossom.
W Averell Harriman told reporters in London he believes the Soviet Union seeks peace in Vietnam while only Peking sees advantage in continuing the war. He noted growing world opinion for peace and said U.S. elections may trend hawkish, urging tough U.S. resolve as Truman did over Korea.

Nine hours after launch Lunar Orbiter 2 passed a test and aimed to surpass Orbiter 1 by capturing more than 200 photos of 13 potential moon landing sites. The 850 pound craft rotated to Canopus for navigation as it sped toward the moon at 5200 mph.
Pfc. William H. Wallace of Williston Park New York led C Company 2nd Battalion 27th Wolfhounds for 22 hours of jungle fighting in Tay Inh Province. He relayed frontline updates to Maj. Guy S. Meloy III and held his unit together amid heavy enemy fire and dwindling ammunition. Wallace earned a Silver Star for his bravery.
