American troops have landed in French colonies in North Africa under General Dwight Eisenhower to lead the invasion.
The landing, aided by the British navy and air forces, will be reinforced by many British army divisions. President Roosevelt announced in a White House briefing and a London communique that the operation aims to prevent Axis invasion of Africa and to aid Russia, with France assured of no territorial aims. The release included a Roosevelt radio message in French urging French cooperation and promising withdrawal after the menace is removed.
Soviet forces reported heavy resistance from German troops across Stalingrad and the Caucasus as Red Army units recaptured two fortified positions in a factory area and repelled drives from the Arctic to the Deep Caucasus. The noon communique claimed destruction of nine blockhouses and about 180 German officers and men in the southern city defenses, with German fortifications wrecked northeast of Stalingrad and enemy losses mounting. Tokyo reports Imperial headquarters says Japanese naval forces sank 21 Allied submarines in the three months from late July to late October while losing two of their own subs. It also claims 34 Allied merchant ships totaling 252,400 tons were sunk and 29 Japanese merchant vessels totaling 122,500 tons lost in the same period.
New York dispatch reports a mighty Allied fleet may have sailed from Gibraltar toward the Mediterranean in a suspected second front plan. Berlin broadcasts hint at British aims to seize North African ports and a major convoy with Rodney and carriers is described, though details remain unconfirmed and contested by Axis sources.
The Navy reported American troops advanced east of their Guadalcanal positions in a move to isolate a threatened Japanese beachhead near Koli Point. Marines repelled counterattacks on the western flank as bombers struck Guadalcanal without inflicting damage. Air patrols bombed and strafed enemy concentrations while two Nipponese forces halted attempts to break through.

Moscow reports show defense front gains as Stalin vows new counterblows against Hitler. The premier says over 8 million invaders have been taken out of action and Russia will clear fascist forces from its soil. He urges continued defense, discipline, and preparation for further offensives. Workers take Sunday off to honor the milestone.
