Army Cuts Troops in Little Rock Oversee Integration

Washington reports a second wave of troop reductions in Little Rock with about 225 troops from the 101st Airborne remaining and around 900 Guardsmen of the 153rd Infantry on federal duty. At start in September 1957, more than 10 000 Guardsmen were federalized to enforce Central High School desegregation under Eisenhower and Governor Faubus. The Army notes further thinning to maintain order while honoring federal court orders.

Almond Wins Virginia Governor Race Amid Integration Debate

J Almond Jr. carried a massive landslide in Virginia defeating Republican Ted Dalton as voters rewarded moderation on school race issues. Almond won about 63.7 percent of the vote. lieutenant governor and attorney general results followed. Separately Coast Guard Sebago reported a radar false image resemblance to a bright planet, later attributed to atmospheric bubbles and hot air.

Two State Troopers Slain in North Carolina Shootings

Grim-faced State Highway Patrolmen hunted a driver after two troopers were shot and killed at separate spots along central North Carolina highways. Pfc Wister Lee Reece of Ramseur died at a speed checkpoint on U S 220 and Pfc J T Gates, a 10 year veteran, died near Sanford. A passenger, Robert Perry Jr., 30 of Norman NC, was held on an open charge after claiming he was a hitchhiker.

Patrol Seeks Two Couples In Cadillacs

The State Highway Patrol asks two unnamed couples in Cadillacs who stopped near Sanford after Patrol Pfc. J. T. Brown was shot to contact authorities. They may have talked to Brown and could provide vital information about the killer, who also killed Pfc. Wister Lee Reece on US 220 nearby. No descriptions are available.
