Local churches report rapid membership growth and expanded programs outgrowing aging quarters. Leaders credit staff and members for achievements and stress preparation for future demands. First Evangelical and Reformed Church hosts its second annual church bazaar with turkey dinner today.
Green St Baptist hosts closing revival service with Dr Baker J Cauthen executive secretary of the Foreign Mission Board of Richmond Va as Sunday evening speaker. Dr Cauthen was elected in October 1953 to fill the vacancy left by Dr M Theron Rankin. Dr Marshall Craig delivers the final Sunday morning message after a season of active service as a denomination servant and speaker at state and southwide events.
The First Baptist Church of Salisbury and the Baptist Student Union of Catawba College host a state convention meeting Friday through Sunday. Delegates include about a hundred students from colleges statewide with a High Point College group. Ann Hancock of Green Street Baptist is Catawba College B S A president and convention hostess.
The ex house and lots behind the church have been purchased to give the Lexington Ave Baptist 250 feet of access to Bridges St. The house will be used by the church with plans for a weekday nursery in time. Tonight at 7 o clock a church supper for men features Horace Easom as speaker to help organize a Brotherhood.
The Rev T G Madison pastor of Calvary Methodist departs after Sunday worship to Winston-Salem for a revival series at Oak Summit Methodist led by Rev John Green through Friday. In Madison’s absence, Rev Whitesides will lead the next evening service. The church also announces Stokes Hall to direct the Methodist Youth Fellowship. Bazaar by Women’s Society of Christian Service at Main St Methodist.
The Senate plans last minute talks on procedure for a special session as a censure vote against Sen. McCarthy of Wisconsin looms within a week or two. McCarthy and allies hold strategy meetings while Johnson and Knowland clash over timing and method.
Washington church leader Bishop G. Ole Oxnam urged the Iowa State Education Association centennial attendees to defend teachers from what he called anti American attacks. He argued teachers face crowded rooms low pay and baseless accusations of disloyalty from self appointed critics and warned against subversion by communists seeking to erode public schooling.

State police said a patient at Kalamazoo State Mental Hospital confessed to the sex slaying of 71 year old nurse Marilyn Kraai. Louis Maurice Smith 18 admitted luring her to a basement room and killing her after an assault. He was committed to the hospital from Parchment.
Secretary of State Dulles announced the immediate dismissal of John Paton Davies Jr., citing lack of judgment and reliability. The move ends Davies’s 23-year diplomatic career and follows decades of debate over U S policy toward China and Chiang Kai-shek.

In Charleston a 29 year old sailor Terrence W Green held police at bay for over two hours with a cocked pistol pressed to his 18 month old son's chest. He finally surrendered and turned over the boy to a detective after assurances the child would not be placed with his wife who is seeking a divorce. Green faced an assaulting an officer charge as officers repeatedly tried to arrest him on a wife beating case. Mike Green was given into welfare custody.
A tropical disturbance rose from the Pacific with increasing intensity. The Manila Weather center reported the storm 400 miles east-southeast of Samar Island with winds reaching 115 mph and forecast to strike the Central Philippines Sunday afternoon along a direct path through the country.
