Pork Prices Fall as Lard Slump Hits Hog Market
Retail pork chops in the Chicago basic market fell about 23 percent from last summer while whole hams dropped 15 percent. Analysts cite weak lard prices as a key factor, since about 15 percent of a hog becomes lard, forcing packers to pay less for live hogs unless meat gains offset the loss.
