Governor Hodges reported Europe tour results as very encouraging with three shipping lines agreeing to include Morehead City and Wilmington in cargo runs. The mission aims to strengthen Europe North Carolina contacts rather than sign immediate contracts.
Washington AP reports scattered election results show modest gains for Republicans in some states but a generally gloomy outlook in major cities. Democratic leaders claim a strong 1958-tinged mandate as they gear up for the 1960 campaign while Republican chairman Thruston Morton notes net losses in large cities and modest gains elsewhere. The North Carolina focus on trade missions to Germany and the Hodges party's European tour are described alongside efforts to attract foreign industry and rebuild postwar economies.
British statesman Philip Noel-Baker, long a proponent of disarmament and peace, received the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo. A Labour MP for thirty years, he reacted calmly in London and noted his career with involvement in the Paris 1919 peace conference, the League of Nations, and the United Nations.

Eddie Sutton 38 a plant worker was charged with assault after chasing the shooter as shots damaged a chair in James Whit’s home and Grady Godwin fired back at a fleeing vehicle. Police said three occupants were in the car Sutton’s pistol allegedly matched the bullet.
Heavy snow and freezing winds sweep from Montana to Michigan with gusts up to 70 mph. Four deaths blamed on exposure and traffic incidents in Montana Wisconsin and Colorado. Snow depths reach six inches or more with closures and hazardous driving across the plains and into Texas.
Washington hears that George Abrams former Revlon executive testified rigging the $64,000 television quiz shows was desperation to save declining ratings. He said Martin Revson may not have known contestants futures were decided in sponsor producer meetings and accused sponsor representatives of at least tacit awareness.
Army officer Capt. Michael O'Rourke resigned his commission at Fort Sill after saying he would appear as a civilian if called before Congress. He had denied receiving help on Tic Tac Dough, following producer Howard Felsher's testimony alleging aid to contestants. The resignation was approved by the Army and accepted here.
Dr. John G. Torney, a Philadelphia psychiatrist, says most criminals share emotional immaturity and impulsiveness. He links crime to poor social controls and unrestrained childhood, arguing stricter parenting could reduce crime rates.
In Fayetteville North Carolina a mother found three of her children dead in their bed after supper. Doctors indicated possible poisoning. Sheriff W D Clark reported no poison found at the home. The deceased children range in age from two to ten, with the two younger being siblings of four others who were reportedly healthy.
