Japanese troops launched a surprise assault along the south bank of Soochow Creek driving Chinese defenders from four villages. The engagement allowed 3,000 Japanese troops to cross the creek two miles west of Rubicon village amid heavy rains that limited air bombardment.
New York November 5. Dun & Bradstreet Trade Review reports mixed progress with retail distribution 4 to 15 percent higher than a year ago in most districts while wholesale volume stays flat. Cancellations are modest. textile orders shrink as inventories are pressed to low levels ahead of price cuts. Fall promotions and men’s wear sales drive consumer buying in several cities.
The Blair Park clubhouse in High Point was opened in a dedication at 2 PM with J C Cole and Mayor Grayson giving addresses. The $230000 to $250000 building, financed by the city and WPA, completes Blair park development begun by the Blair family gifting 13 acres for a public park.
In Cincinnati on November 6 Anna Marie Hahn neared the climax of her death penalty case. With only hours left for final arguments by state and defense a jury of 11 women and one man prepared to deliberate on whether she murdered Jacob Wagner an elderly gardener by poison.
The North Carolina Collegiate Press Association opened its fall convention with a reception and began a business session in Raleigh. Governor Hoey is slated to address the journalists tomorrow, with delegates attending the Citadel North Carolina State football game in the afternoon. About 20 colleges are represented.
Mary Ellen Wents six year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Charlie Wents was struck by a car on West Salisbury street in Asheboro sustaining a knee fracture and head injuries. The vehicle was reportedly driven by C F Gillem of the state highway department and no charges have been filed. Patrolman A L Moore investigated the accident after witnesses said the girl ran into the street.
The Duke and Duchess of Windsor proceed with a United States tour aboard the Bremen despite American labor protests over what they call slumming parties. Bedaux offers to withdraw as guide, but Windsor remains firm. The Windsors, aboard a diplomatic Paris residence, were to travel to Cherbourg tomorrow for boarding.
Pinehurst November 5 members of the North Car Cotton Manufacturers Association at their annual meeting discussed taxation issues involving materials used by the industry. The session reviewed state provisions and possible impacts on production costs.
The annual meeting of the North Carolina Methodist student conference at the University Methodist Church in Chapel Hill opened with broad representation from communities across the state. Delegates came from Green University of North Carolina, N Chicora, Bion, Guilford, Pfeiffer and other institutions.

Covington authorities say 15 year old Mitchell Wright remains missing after several days. Doliece reported the youth was last seen at his home in Covington and declared missing today.

Dr. C W Bates requested withdrawal in favor of RLV Pritchard who will head the M P conference. New officers include Secretary W Paschal Burlington and Treasurer J H Allen Reidsville with other officials and a stationing committee formed by several Rev and Dr leaders from multiple towns. The statistics committee report is due at the final session Monday.
Senator Robert R Reynolds of North Carolina stated in Indianapolis that the United States would not enter another war. He cited the determination of American mothers and taxpayers' desire for peace as the driving forces behind his forecast.
