Post election, Democrats boast major gains with A. Harry Moore in New Jersey and Ruby Laffoon in Kentucky securing governorships. Yet looming political splits may emerge over House leadership and Haddon Jack Garner’s path to speaker, as party futures hinge on organizing a new House majority.
Circuit Judge Ruby Laffoon, Democrat, defeats Louisville Mayor William B. Harrison, Republican, to become governor as Democrats gain solid majorities in both the Kentucky Senate and House. Republicans argue Harrison may still win. highway commission issue cited. Laffoon also sweeps his state ticket, continuing Democratic control of state government.
The Rev. J. W. Vinson of the American Presbyterian Mission at Haichow Kiangsu province is reported slain after being kidnapped by Chinese bandits. Consul General Willis R. Peck says he received news of the death and will seek fuller details before the U S government acts. Vinson was a native of Fairfield county South Carolina and is survived by three children in Lexington Virginia.
Winston Salem November 5 A grand jury indicted magistrate J E Saintsing a licensed pharmacist and attorney for embezzlement of 488 plus six counts of malfeasance The case stems from claims of improper jurisdiction in automobile matters where magisterial authority was not granted by law
Dr Edwin W Kemmerer of Princeton told the New York Advertising Club that the American gold standard and dollar are impregnable and that New York now has a chance to replace London as the world financial center He cited the United States vast gold reserves and noted some decline since 1928 while urging confidence to put idle gold to work
Secretary Hurley announced a 44 million dollar reduction from the current year’s War Department budget. He said the cut preserves army efficiency through economies and deferment of nonessential programs, with no wage reductions. The rivers and harbors program shows savings, and details remain confidential. Army appropriations this year were 481,565,735.
In Rio de Oro, Lt Erich von Satzen of the former Uhlan guard remains in the French African frontier, married to a tribal chief’s daughter and titled Caid El Hadi Aleman. He claims to still obey orders, pursue his duties, and fight the French, after a 1916 mission aboard UC-20 to stir local tribes against colonial forces.
Former Kentucky lieutenant governor Henry H. Denhardt was shot five times in downtown Bowling Green as election tensions rise. W. K. Dent, a Republican worker, fired. Denhardt was struck near the lung and hospitalized in serious but hopeful condition. Dent surrendered at police headquarters.
The state rested its case today in the trial of Carios Rector former sheriff of Greenville county charged with being an accessory to the robbery of the Bank of Travelers Rest last March.
Federal Judge John M. Killits told the jury in the $50,000 libel case of Nan Britton against Marion hotel keeper C. A. Klunk to decide if statements in The Answer to the Presidents Daughter were justified. If justified, verdict for the defendant. if not, damages to be assessed.
In Raleigh on November 5 Will Stephens, a Black spectator, dropped a flask in city court. Captain Nick Warren detected the smell of alcohol and the judge B M Bell sentenced him to 60 days on the roads.
Cameron merchant T A Hendrix says his department store has been burglarized repeatedly. Seventeen men are now serving time on the roads for offenses connected to the same establishment over the past two years.
Chicago news brief reports a strong wheat surge at the market opening with quoted gains up to 118 cents from the previous day and May wheat reaching 70 cents, while corn futures also rose. Heavy profit taking paused the advance briefly before prices climbed past opening levels.
Fruit Industries Inc has agreed with the government to discontinue selling its Vineglo grape concentrate. Donald Conn saying the move is the firm's option and not government directed, the company notes Vineglo is about five percent of its grape concentrate business.

In Toledo a $30000 damage suit by Nan Britton against hotel keeper C A Klunk went to the jury in federal court. In Chicago Ralph Capone surrendered to federal agents to begin a three year sentence for income tax violations after bond forfeiture deadline.
London November 5 Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald remains head of the British government in the new cabinet with Stanley Baldwin as lord president and Neville Chamberlain as chancellor of the exchequer succeeding Philip Snowden. Sir John Simon becomes foreign secretary.
