Furniture Rate Hike Predicted by Southern Official
J. T. Ryan executive vice president of the Southern Furniture Manufacturers Association says a general revision of carload freight rates on furniture east of the Rockies may come soon. Railroads have studied a uniform rate basis since 1954, with Cincinnati hearings last October. Western objections may ease as Southwestern lines maintain current commodity and Class 35 rates mixed with the proposed uniform basis. Ryan favors a lower base than railroads propose, hoping acceptance after talks with Southern railroad traffic representatives.
