North Carolina stayed a Democratic stronghold as Truman carried the state with a decisive margin. Kerr Scott won the governorship and ten statewide offices. the party claimed most congressional seats though the 12th district remained unresolved.
Reports say George C. Marshall plans to retire in January regardless of the election outcome. He attended U N meetings and avoided comment, smiling when asked about his future.
President Truman claimed a sweeping victory with 28 states and 4M electoral votes while Dewey conceded after late California results. Thurmond carried four states and 38 electoral votes as launch of a Democratic Senate and House loomed.
Kansas City reports Truman’s return from Independence to Washington, with plans to reach Key West after victory. Dispatch notes Senate with 34 Democrats 42 Republicans and House at 246 Democrats 148 Republicans. outlines proposed civil rights laws and price controls amid post election calm and market reaction.
Democrats claim control of Congress in a dramatic election. A second proposed amendment to curb presidential clemency powers in death cases also seems favored by voters with clear margins reported. Final official results await ratification by the next General Assembly.
The United Nations general assembly scheduled a plenary session to consider Mexico's appeal for renewed big power efforts to resolve differences peacefully. The resolution, approved unanimously by the political committee, urges renewed efforts though seen as largely symbolic. Election returns from the United States dominated attention as delegates continued work.
The Associated Press reports general rain across the Carolinas with a mild, partly cloudy outlook for tomorrow. Rain fell over most areas, except Wilmington Elizabeth City Rocky Mount and New Bern according to federal weather bureau dispatches.
