Refuge to Protect Migratory Waterfowl in Carteret County
The Hanes Lassiter refuge in Carteret County will be posted and marked immediately with a nine mile sound and ocean protection zone. Officials say the area is among the Atlantic coast’s richest for migratory waterfowl and will provide sanctuary from hunting pressures. The property was donated by Mr and Mrs Lassiter under a five year probationary arrangement, praised by Gov Gardner as a major conservation act. Institutions involved include the North Carolina Department of Conservation and Development, state game warden C H England, district warden G A Nicoll, federal game protector W L Birsch, and Carteret county warden Clyde Mason.
