Cox Says New Watergate Prosecutor Will Retain Staff
Archibald Cox testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee that a new Watergate prosecutor is likely to keep about 90 percent of his staff, stressing that staff choices were based on professional experience, not politics. Nixon named William Saxbe as attorney general and Leon Jaworski as Cox’s successor, while Cox urged legislation to shield a future prosecutor from firing. The committee plans two to three more weeks of hearings to consider the special prosecutor bill and extending the grand jury’s mandate. Cox returns next week. Richardson also set to testify.
