Church Opens Restaurant-Supermarket in Brooklyn
In Brooklyn the St. John's Baptist Church launches a combined restaurant and market adopted to aid Black residents. Pastor Rev F Arthur Reed swaps robes for a butcher coat as the store opens with a four booth restaurant, six stools and a small grocery and meat section. Six women parishioners are employed at 1.25 dollars per hour. The pastor says the venture mixes business with faith, aiming to end dependence on whites for jobs.
