Large downtown Halloween party draws about 20 000 people as crowd disperses by 11 pm. Police report minimal trouble with minor incidents including teen envolving fireworks and affray charges. Firefighters handle a few trash fires as revelers head home before the witch call deadline.
Police report a pair of tennis shoes matching bloodstains found along Highway 14 near the Rasmusen home in the Evelyn Hartley case. Investigators sent the shoes to the state crime lab as hopes fade for a quick breakthrough amid conflicting leads and a large international backdrop of prisoner interviews.
Senator Joseph McCarthy says a member of the Army loyalty screening board has been removed over alleged Communist front activity. McCarthy declined to identify the individual but praised Army Secretary Robert Stevens for cleaning house and noted the member had been interviewed recently by the Senate permanent investigative subcommittee staff.
New York and New Jersey area dairy prices rise by about one cent per quart after a six day strike that halted milk deliveries to 12 million people. Settlement came after an all night session at City Hall with Mayor Impellitteri and union and industry negotiators.
In Washington on October 31 Atty Gen Brownell denied being the unnamed figure “Mr X” Wagner cited as urging parole for labor tortionist Joseph S Fay. Wagner said he did not know the person, while Brownell called the accusation false noting no inquiry or request for Fay parole by him. Fay serves 7½ to 15 years for a $365000 stake down. parole was denied earlier this year.
Washington reports Secretary Benson may abandon plans to reorganize and trim the Soil Conservation Service amid farm price worries. Republicans fear the move could affect next year’s elections, with calls for Benson’s resignation growing from Sen. Young and others though Benson backs Eisenhower and intends to stay.
Boston news reports that Werner Fornos a 19 year old German refugee formerly a Soviet labor camp inmate and stowaway who entered the United States four times had deportation proceedings dropped by the government. Now a Boston University freshman and Boston Post copy boy he awaits further word while expressing gratitude to the nation.
Gov. Umstead promotes George M. Fountain of Tarboro from solicitor for the 2nd Judicial District to a special Superior Court seat. Elbert S. Peel of Williamston named solicitor to succeed Fountain. Both will take oaths next Friday. Umstead plans up to 12 special judges, five per East and West.
At the United Nations Malik accuses Washington of using atrocity allegations to fuel rearmament and the Cold War. The U.S. plan cites germ warfare in Korea and China, while Lodge pushes for General Assembly debate as steering committee considers agenda inclusion.
