May 31 AP reports fifty Chinese warplanes met a raiding Japanese squadron near Hankow and stopped the invasion of the provisional Chinese capital. Chinese air headquarters say 15 of 36 Japanese planes were shot down while one Chinese plane did not return.

Pair Given Life Term For Slaying
ELIZABETH CITY May 1, Barnard Irving Royals and Joe Thomas West were sentenced to life in a federal penitentiary in Atlanta for the slaying of J. W. Jackson Jr an alcohol tax unit agent. Judge I M Meekins imposed the sentence after they pleaded guilty to second degree murder. Jackson was shot near the Virginia line March 8 while inspecting an automobile halted on the highway.
