Allied troops pulled from Vegas and Elko as a major Chinese assault along the invasion road to Seoul intensified. U S and Turkish forces fought back with heavy artillery, air strikes, and Marine tanks, while Sabre pilots claimed several MiG kills amid a brutal five mile front.
A War Office communique reports British troops in Korea repulsing a major Communist attack on the Hook United Nations position about 12 miles east of Panmunjom. The assault, described as the heaviest this year, was resisted mainly by the Duke of Wellington Regiment the Kings Regiment and the Royal Artillery with no extra details disclosed.
J Hampton Price of Leaksville was named chair as a new five member board was sworn in in Gov Umstead's office. Raymond Maxwell, Raleigh, was re elected secretary with John G Dawson of Kinston named secretary. The board includes H A Maddox of Murphy Democrat and J E Holshouser Boone and J B Hill Denton Republicans. Gov Umstead urged the statutory non political role and expressed confidence in fair elections.
In Fayetteville a rug caught fire when a floor furnace ignited after a 49 degree reading. Firefighters arrived at Dick Monterose’s home as temperatures dropped from a high of 100 earlier in the week.
In Raleigh the American Institute of Architects recognized two students from the State College school of design for academic excellence. Bruno Leon of Detroit and Fred Taylor of Kingston were named as honorees.
Myrtle Beach hosts a Carolinas Virginia Radio and Television News Directors Association meeting with Ed Kirk of WPTF Raleigh Jack Knell of WBT Charlotte and Nathan Cooper of WMNC Morganton leading a radio news panel. Tom Eaton of WTIC Hartford Conn president of the national association will speak at tomorrow night's banquet.
Raleigh North Carolina State College will award degrees to 817 graduates at Reynolds Coliseum on June 7. After the ceremonies a record 227 Army and Air Force ROTC graduates will be commissioned as second lieutenants and enter active service.
More than 500 delegates from 35 lodges attended the Southern Pines North Carolina Elks convention as it opened its two day session. A memorial service ritualistic contests and tonight's banquet and dance were on the program.
Nearly 300 members of the Tar Heel licensed practical nurses association elected and installed new officers at their Winston-Salem convention. Raleigh attorney James H. Walker spoke and Miss Aileen Luther of Raleigh reported on activities. The group noted $1,200 in lobbying expenses for the 1953 Legislature as the General Assembly amended LPN examination statutes.
The Western North Carolina Public Health Association elected officers during its annual one day business meeting in Marion. Speakers included Dr. Roger Howell from UNC School of Public Health Miss Dorothy Boone from the State Board of Public Health and Dr. Robert Fink from the State School Health Coordinating Service.
Raleigh Speller and Clyde Brown, both Negro rapists, were executed in the Central Prison gas chamber after final appeals failed. Speller insisted on his innocence, while Brown had confessed. Witnesses report crowds and a reporter fainting as the chair chamber proceedings concluded.
London reports the final full dress practice for the coronation proceeds without incident. More than 1,200 participants, under Duke of Norfolk supervision, stage trappings while Queen Elizabeth II delegates her role to a stand‑in. the crowd sees the maids of honor outfits and St. Edward's crown is guarded. The State Highway Commission voted to retain W. H. Rogers Jr. as chief state highway engineer after a accord between Chairman A. H. Graham and Gov. Umstead. Rogers had guided the 200 million dollar secondary road program under Gov. Scott. The panel also awarded contracts to low bidders on 31 projects and rejected two high bids including sidewalk work on the Dan River Bridge at Madison.
Romanian diplomat Christadhe Zambeti flies from Idlewild to Brussels denying a State Department expulsion as a frame up. He accuses V C Georgescu of leading a Romanian spy trial and cites a personal crisis over his sons amid a blackmail scheme tied to Communist Romania.
North Korea and China rejected at least one major concession in secret Monday sessions at Panmunjom. Gen Nam Il said the Reds oppose the new plan and the old one, refusing to leave final prisoner fate to the United Nations. About 48,500 Allied prisoners have refused repatriation. The plan would leave unexplainable cases to a post armistice conference, a notion Nam called inconceivable.

Sgt William J Costello of Chicago describes the brutal fighting as tanks blasted high velocity shells into the hill. Tank driver William K Gaddy of Concord NC recalls mortars hitting his hatch but escaping unharmed.
New York Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were sentenced to die in Sing Sing Prison for atomic espionage. Federal Judge Irving R. Kaufman set the execution date for the week of June 15 amid ongoing defense maneuvers. Defense lawyers had tried to delay the date until next Monday but were unsuccessful.
Defending champion Harvie Ward of Atlanta will face Joe Carr of Ireland in a 36 hole final after semifinal wins. Ward beat Arthur Perowne 6 and 5 and Carr elim inated Cecil Beamish on the 19th hole. Ward seeks back to back titles. Carr reaches final for first time.
Six State College students were arrested last night near Meredith College after a campus panty raid. Two of Wednesday night’s raiders were fined in City Court and four had charges dropped for insufficient evidence. D. R. Cox and George Jarvis McMillan paid fines for disorderly conduct and reckless driving, while Charles A. Blalock, a non student, faced no charges after an investigation. State College officials will conduct a full inquiry after final exams begin Saturday.

Duke Power announces a brief electricity outage for about five minutes starting at 6 a.m. Sunday to facilitate a switch at the Southern Avenue sub-station. The cut will affect a five block wide area from the Southern railroad tracks to Parkway west of Main Street.
A four engine trans port plane completed the first nonstop commercial flight from Los Angeles to Paris covering 5700 miles in 20 hours 28 minutes. The Douglas DC 6B averaged 278 mph on the flight, breaking the prior 3900 mile nonstop record. Transport Aeriens Intercontinentaux of France purchased the plane from Douglas. The flight departed L A International Airport yesterday with a French crew and three Douglas observers aboard.
Thunderstorms and showers blasted the Western Great Plains while the Eastern half stayed warm and fair. A tornado damaged a new $150,000 thirty-unit motel in Liberal Kansas with no casualties reported. Unconfirmed twister reports came from Newcastle Wyoming and Hayes South Carolina.
