Character Lessons From School Efforts
A 1925 column argues true schooling builds character through effort not marks. It cites memory work, spelling, and arithmetic as proving honesty and self-reliance come from doing quality work, not simply recalling facts. Parents and teachers should focus on genuine skill and personal growth over the “get by” mindset.
