He argued with co defendant Donald Wightman 19 and said he would not prove Gladys innocent by proving Wightman guilty. Both defendants blamed the other and gave divergent accounts of the slaying.

John D Rockefeller’s body was returned to Cleveland for burial after funeral services in Tarrytown New York. The car carried the financier to Hast Cleveland near Lake View Cemetery where a grave was prepared between his mother and wife.
A chartered monoplane stalled on takeoff and crashed in a alfalfa field near Santa Maria airport killing two women and two men. Victims were Mrs. C. W. Whitney and Mrs. D. B. Fauntleroy of Carmel, Calif., Harry F. Emme of Los Angeles, and Rod Keenan, pilot for Joe Lewis Air Service in Burbank. Eyewitness L. Ball reported the high-wing Lockheed stalled about 100 feet up, then burst into flames on impact.
In Monts France on May 27 Mrs. D. Buchanan Merryman known as Aunt Bessie took charge of final preparations for the marriage of her niece to the Duke of Windsor at Chateau de Cande. Attendants say she rolled up her sleeves and went to work as the bride elect and the former king prepare for the June 3 ceremony. Herman L. Rogers, spokesman for the couple, said 18 of 80 invited accepted and would arrive over the weekend.

Japanese dispatches say three destroyers and a cruiser are anchored in Swatow harbor ready to back a demand for satisfaction over an alleged assault on Japanese Consul policeman Kiyoshi Aoyama. Aoyama was seized beaten and dragged from his home by 40 armed Chinese soldiers.
London May 27 The House of Commons cheered retiring Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin as he announced a salary increase for members by 1 000 a year. Current pay is 400 pounds about 2 000 dollars and will rise to 600 pounds about 3 000 dollars.
The UNC executive committee recommended to the full board on June 4 that Dr. William DeBernier MacNider be named dean of the medical school replacing Dr. Charles Staples Mangum who requested relief to focus on teaching. The committee also proposed Prof. Carl R. Douglas to succeed Dr. M. R. Trebue in university administration.
London May 27 A Ram says MacDonald thrice prime minister offered his resignation as lord president after meeting King George VI at Buckingham Palace. It was understood he did not hand over the seal and would do so in the cabinet reshuffle when a new government forms after Prime Minister Baldwin retires this week.

Woodbury Tennessee May 27 a 65 year old farmer John W Davis is jailed on a murder charge after a coroner jury ruled his wife Jodie died of blood poisoning following an alleged illegal operation. Sheriff John T Smith said Davis claimed the operation was by her will and not linked to his labor as a plow horse.
