Four crew members Shirley J. Short chief pilot Richard K. Peck co pilot Lewis S. Rice and Robert Gormley mechanic died when the Chicago Daily News plane Blue Streak crashed north of Glen Ellyn Illinois during a 2000 kilometer speed record run. The tandem motor sesquiplane plunged to ground after a low altitude flight. A farmer reported a survivor identified as Gormley badly hurt but a doctor later said all four were dead. The test was supervised by the National Aeronautical Association.

Joe Caccia 31 of Bryn Mawr PA and Clarence Grover 23 of Haverford PA died in Indy practice for the 500 mile race. Their car lost a tire, vaulted the wall, struck a tree and burst into flames. Caccia died after rescue. Grover died instantly.
