From Spitzbergen the dirigible Italia has been missing for over 80 hours amid fog and adverse winds as authorities fear a disaster. Norway pledges aid and Roald Amundsen leads a relief effort while officials monitor fuel exhaustion expected by dawn.
Governor Adam McMullen predicts a 100000 farmer caravan to Kansas City to press for agricultural economic equality, with radio calls and camping sites planned. Illinois farmers also called to veto protest meetings in Springfield and Galesburg as Congress nears adjournment after a busy session on Boulder Dam and McNary Haugen farm relief.
Richmond Va May 26 James Reid a reserve airmail pilot was killed when his plane crashed in a field 11 miles north of Richmond during an apparent forced landing. Motor trouble halted the engine and residents noted the plane rolled over a ten foot embankment. The coroner and doctor Gravatt said the injuries were fatal with possible neck fracture. This followed another fatal air mail crash near Richmond earlier this month involving Edward J Morrisey.
The Citta di Milano base ship prepared to sail for a rescue as Italia remains missing after the North Pole flight. Fog and strong winds hindered communication since yesterday, with possible landings in Vadsee or Novaya Zemlya explored and Amundsen called into talks for relief options.
Concord headlines report nine Cannon mills with 20,899,700 capital stock to form the Cannon Mills company with offices in KanNapolis. No management or financing changes are planned. The merger would create the South’s largest cotton concern with 1,000,000 common and 700,000 preferred shares.
The Methodist Episcopal general conference in Kansas City elected Dr. E. Stanley Jones, longtime India missionary, as bishop on the 20th ballot with 560 votes. Also chosen were Dr. Raymond J. Wade and Dr. James C. Baker. consecration is set for Sunday. Disputes over Episcopal residences and related internal legislation dominated remaining business.
Senator F M Simmons appealed for anti Smith delegates to county conventions in a broadcast to Raleigh area listeners. The telegraphed message urged airtime at 12 45 announcing the meeting of Democratic precinct clubs statewide and sharply questioned Governor Smiths qualifications for the nomination.
Washington May 26. The House approved the conference report on the 222 million 495 thousand dollar tax reduction bill and sent it to President Coolidge for signature.
Allen Frew of Davidson College won first place in the Dixie divisional oratorical contest in Greenville earning the right to represent the south at the national contest in Los Angeles. Mrs Frew spoke on The American Constitution. Vanderbilt Tennessee’s Joe V Williams took second place as alternate. seven southern states were represented under Prof C C Cunningham regional director.
James Edwin Kerr a renowned South Carolina poet and veteran newspaperman was found dead in bed at his Aiken residence today May 26. He was well known in the state for his literary and newspaper work. The cause of death was not announced.
In Valley Forge Pennsylvania on May 26 stamp collectors braved rain for the first Valley Forge memorial stamps. The issue commemorates Washingtons army encampment at Valley Forge in 1778 1928 with a red vignette of George Washington kneeling in prayer and a tree on white background. Mrs Laura Kirkmer former postmaster received the first stamp. The stamp went on sale at Valley Forge and other post offices.
The Ramsey award of $100 for intelligent criticism on logical theory and mathematical implication was given to Ben L. Taylor, a black professor of physics and calculus at Shaw University in Raleigh. Competitor Berrard Russell, an English philosopher, was noted. Russell's thesis will appear in the Forum's September issue.
In Pittsboro on May 26 the Lawrence defense presented more testimony to dispute the state's charge that W Herbert Lawrence slugged Mrs Annie Terry and cast her into the Cape Fear river on March 24. E E Williams testified a green coupe with Virginia plates, possibly Mrs Terry and a man not resembling Lawrence, stopped for directions near Merry Oaks.
James R. Reid, reserve pilot for the New York Atlanta air mail route, died when his plane carrying northbound mail from Richmond, Virginia, wrecked in a field near Tappahannock road north of Richmond. Pitcairn Aviation said the aircraft rolled over a ten foot embankment during a forced landing due to unclear weather and possible engine trouble. Verne E. Treat remained in Washington on the southbound leg due to fog, then Reid attempted the northbound run. fog vanished but he did not see the embankment in time.
Thirty German educators on a U S tour studied American education today with visits to North Carolina State College and Raleigh public schools. The study tour is organized by the Central Institute of Berlin and the International Institute of Teachers College at Columbia University New York.
In New York two women plan Poetry House a home for poets in Greenwich Village to open June 1. Miss Barbara Young lyric poet and Miss Frances Randolph patron of poetry establish a reading room and host readings to foster poetry as a respected art.
In Raleigh on May 26 the Smith and anti Smith forces expanded their struggle for North Carolina's 24 delegates by holding precinct meetings statewide. Delegates chosen at county conventions will select state delegates and later determine national Democratic representatives. Hull backers urged proportional voting, while Brummitt urged free votes for any candidate. Four Goldsboro precinct meetings produced 16 Hull and 12 Smith delegates in Ward One.
Kansas dispatch reports Dr. W. W. Wineinger of Dighton found slain near Oakley after lured from his home while aiding wounded desperadoes from the Lamar bank robbery. The note left in the car hints at motive, while possemen sweep the rough countryside seeking the fleeing criminals and the kidnapped First National Bank official E. A. Kessinger.
A Denver running fight with robbers in a car similar to the Lamar bank killers’ vehicle halted a patrol pursuit after shots shattered a windshield. Police fear the crooks are hiding near Denver as posses and airplanes scour western Kansas for the bandits linked to the earlier banker killings and a Kansas physician’s death.
Maine's 15 delegates win front floor seats at the Kansas City GOP gathering. They sit center front with Pennsylvania to their left and California to their right, Massachusetts behind them, and a broad grouping of New England, New York, New Jersey, and southern states following in mapped order.
