States Rights Third Party Disclaimed in Alabama Primaries
States Rights leaders say their aim is to lift anti loyalty oath restrictions to allow Eisenhower Democrats to run in Democratic primaries. H Coleman Long and Frank Mizell argue the move would restore party control to the States Rights faction and permit disqualified Eisenhower supporters to seek nomination in 1960. Mizell notes about 195,000 Eisenhower voters would be ineligible under current rules. The factions contest the state committee seats with 32 States Rights members and 23 national loyalists already on the 72 seat panel, with runoff seats pending.
