Secretary Krug called John L. Lewis and the United Mine Workers negotiating committee to a 10:30 a.m. meeting as a two week coal strike truce nears its expiry. The government plan centers on the contract terms while Lewis’s reaction remained undisclosed.
Nominations in eight of twelve congressional districts in North Carolina spark major contests in the Democratic primary. Key incumbents Barden Cooley Doughton and Bulwinkle are not up for renomination while districts five and six feature three-way races with potential runoffs. The eighth district vote appears in progress as part of broad state contests. In Washington the Senate backed a 60-day cooling off period to deter rapid strikes with federal mediation.
Secretary Krug presented John L. Lewis with tentative government proposals to end the soft coal dispute. A truce keeping most miners at work expires at midnight. Lewis will confer again with Krug at 3 30 p m EST as Truman asks Congress for a labor crisis plan.

Senator John H Bankhead of Alabama lay unconscious at Naval Medical Center after collapsing during a finance committee session on price control extension. Doctors considered heat exhaustion or a possible stroke while his staff noted a light stroke on one side. The 73 year old lawmaker was attended by Dr George Calver and remains under observation.
Paris May 25. Dr Marcel Petiot, condemned for killing 27 people in the wartime “murders the Rue la Sueur,” was beheaded at La Sante prison early today. The 55 year old physician, who allegedly took money from victims by promising escape, faced the guillotine with a half smile. His lawyer Rene Floriot said Petiot was awakened before 4 15 am and offered a brief religious farewell to his wife and son.
Thirteen travelers stranded in a strike marooned pullman announced they would remain in the sleeping car until transportation to St. Louis is provided. They bought space on the Knickerbocker limited in New York City and are taking meals at the station or nearby restaurants. A New York Central official said he had no objection.
President Truman told the United Nations economic and social council at its first U S meeting that the council can make peace a reality for the common people worldwide. He said its task is to achieve freedom from want, to encourage production, and to improve open transport and communications.
The Southern railway announced it is running ten regularly scheduled trains with crews including returning union men and railroad officials. Four runs were restored today: No. 4 Chattanooga to Cincinnati at 12 01 p m CST No. 41 Chattanooga to New Orleans at 5 05 p m No. 45 Chattanooga to Memphis at 12 01 a m Sunday and No. 46 Memphis to Chattanooga at 8 p m. Six restored yesterday included No. 35 Washington to Atlanta No. 40 Atlanta to Washington No. 42 New Orleans to Bristol Va No. 1 Cincinnati to Chattanooga No. 35 Chattanooga to Memphis and No. 36 Memphis to Chattanooga. The official declined to say how many striking union men had returned.
A Navy official reported that 85 percent of department commanders surveyed identified 8,510 officers and men with railroading experience in the United States. The total includes 684 conductors 678 trainmen 552 engineers 2 546 brakemen and 4 050 firemen. The Navy has mobilized 19 000 personnel with railroading experience including reserve officers who could be called back. Commanders were asked to assess how many could be used to operate railroads if needed.
A food caravan from Seattle crossed Cedar River watershed to reach Lester, a mountain hamlet cut off by rugged terrain and locked gates. With supplies dwindling to a single day, the relief party arrived to avert shortage for the isolated town.
The Senate Banking Committee voted to end price controls on meat poultry and milk by June 30, adopting amendments aimed at decontrolling milk products and those from livestock. The panel works toward a one year extension bill as House backers push a nine month version amid labor restraint debates. The action accompanies a national mediation board measure and farm delivery protections. President Truman was expected to address the chamber as the session continued.
Washington officials report President Truman will urge Congress to make striking the government a federal offense and to authorize the drafting of workers for government plants. In Philadelphia on May 25 about 135 striking Reading railroad engineers and trainmen returned to work following President Truman’s appeal. Two electric commuter trains operated as service resumed slowly across eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Other lines reported limited returns and ongoing emergency schedules with supervisory staff on trains.
