Durham May 25 Sixty acre Eastwood Lake near here may be drained if diving operations fail to yield the missing Mrs. M. Jewett 67 Boonville Missouri wife of wealthy resident. Martin 24 year old chemist grandson of Mrs. Jewett held on open charge during the search. Mrs. Jewett last seen May 10 at a Boonville hotel. Police reports say she and Martin had traveled from Charlotte to inspect property near Boonville. Bloodstained automobile clothing and personal effects found in Martins possession. He has legal counsel and declined to speak.

The American Newspaper Publishers Association said 54 of 421 daily papers moved classified pages to nine columns to fit more ads without extra paper. A printer’s concern noted space savings near 2 percent from the change.

Shipping Tight Despite Giant Merchant Fleet Says Admiral Land

Rear Admiral E S Land, War Shipping Administrator, told the House Appropriations Committee that despite the merchant fleet expanding to more than three times its prewar size shipping remains very tight now and will stay tight. He cited increased military needs and civilian demands, plus relief programs for conquered territories, as strains on shipping. He outlined a requested $550 350 000 budget for the next fiscal year and projected total expenditures of about $2 840 000 000 with various revenue deductions and funding sources. He also said 65 500 men will be trained to man the growing fleet, including 37 000 new recruits and 28 000 upgrades, plus recruiting 43 000 former seamen back to sea.

Unified Push On Rome Opens As Foes Free

Allied headquarters in Naples reports a Fifth Army merger of the Anzio beachhead and the main force above Terracina for a unified push on Rome. American units reached contact with beachhead patrols as a 14 day drive breached 60 miles of German defenses and forced retreats along the coastal belt. The advance nears the Rome area as German reinforcements pour southward while 10,000 German prisoners have been taken since the offensive began.

American Born Japanese Dies Of Gun Wound

Shiochi James Okamoto a 30 year old American born Japanese died from a gun wound at Tule Lake segregation center after a military police guard fired as a confrontation occurred. The War Relocation Authority reported four blood transfusions were given during surgery by Japanese and Caucasian surgeons. An unidentified civilian employee described the guard warning the man then shooting from a truck.
