Schacht Faces Historic Decision On German Reparations
Paris May 25 Dr Hjalmar Schacht the German reparations spokesman faced a pivotal choice that could shape Germany and Europe's economic future for decades. After fifteen weeks of talks with German conferees and six creditor nations the final word rests with him today tomorrow or Monday. The creditor delegates offered annuities through 59 years totaling about 492 million dollars initially with additional 25 million marks to Belgium, conditions limiting commercialization and dropping some German reservations. The proposed annuities are 109 million dollars less yearly than the Dawes plan and would abandon Dawes protections, risking a future economic crisis if bonds are not honored.
