Loss of Moldavia sinks British transport near English coast

Fifty three American soldiers are reported lost when a torpedo sank the British transport Moldavia off the southern coast of England. Only a few officers are noted among the missing as the vessel went down with a disaster at sea.

War department lists missing from Company B of the 4th Division after the Moldavia torpedoing. Names include Clyde B. Lindsay of Clarksburg Mississippi and Frank Odell of Blytheville Arkansas, both privates. Officers absent from missing roster. Survivors landed at a southern British port after the attack.

No Superintendent Chosen by Council in High Point

The High Point city council held an extraordinary session last evening with 17 applicants for the superintendent position. Few had time to submit recommendations or complete exams, so the head of the schools will be chosen at a future session. Five teachers were elected for 1912 19, per Superintendent Marr. Margaretta Owens Mary E Wood Nellie Dodamead Mrs R M Waters and Ralph G Knight will teach primarily in the primary grades. Knight will handle manual training and has past service in Porto Rico and the United States. Three or four teachers remain to be elected, including three grade posts and one high school mathematics post. It is not stated whether Marr or his successor will head the material search.

German sailors sentenced to death for attempted treason

Fishermen report 13 German sailors were sentenced to death and two to twenty years’ imprisonment by a German court martial for attempted treason linked to British raids on submarine bases at Ostend and Zeebrugge. The information is said to come from Bruges, Belgium.

High Point Observes Wilson Prayer Day With Closings

A mass meeting of Negroes in the city will be held at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 4 o clock to support the war fund of the American Red Cross. Rev James A Clarke pastor of the First artist shared will deliver the address. Burlington negroes recently subscribed 600 for the Red Cross and High Point leaders expect a strong showing from the local community.

Washington May 25 The Red Cross war fund today reached and passed the 100 million minimum total with subscriptions still flowing to the national headquarters at a rate that swamped the complexes. Officers could not determine exact figures but they hoped the minimum would be doubled before the drive ends.

Broadway Theater Damaged by Fire in High Point

The Broadway theater, a rare motion picture venue in High Point, suffered major fire damage this morning after 4am. Estimated losses reach 4000 to 5000 dollars, mostly fixtures, insured for 7000. Fire started near the ticket office. lighting was out in the area since 11pm last night.
